You can work as hard as you want, but if you only have one income, you'll always be one surprise from losing everything.

37%
of adults cannot cover a surprise $400 bill with cash
Fact 01

One surprise away from debt.

More than 1 in 3 adults can't cover a surprise $400 expense with cash. The Federal Reserve says the most common backup is a credit card carried as a balance. So a car repair or a medical bill does not cost you $400. It becomes debt.

  • Americans owe more than $1.2 trillion on credit cards, the highest on record.
  • The average person carrying a balance owes about $6,500.
  • At 18 percent interest, that balance roughly doubles in about four years on minimum payments. You pay for the same emergency twice.

This is the cycle. Your paycheck runs out before the month does, so you reach for credit (If you can get approved), and the interest makes next month harder. Cutting coupons will not fix a math problem this size. More income will.
